About me

The Journal of a History Writer- The story so far. I finished a History PhD in 2005 and left university wondering how I could continue to be an historian, and whether I might not be better off just forgetting it and moving on. I've struggled to combat my own prejudices concerning what an historian is and isn't. Without access to a real world library or primary material offline it's not easy to follow the methods learnt during the PhD.

I have a new path to follow now. I've realised that what I'm trying to be is not an academic historian but a history writer for a general readership. Perhaps that is what I've always been and I've just never found a label for it before. It would certainly explain a lot of my reactions to academia.
